Football Team Has 5-5 Overall Record Six Leemen Named To All-District Team
New assistant coaches lames Byrd, lames Digges, and Harold Erwin aided new head coach Dave Holtsclaw.
The Fighting Leemen, defending champions in the Valley District, fell to the .500 mark in 1968 as they finished 3-3 in the district, and 5-5 overall. The season's high points were wins over Natural Bridge, 41-13, and Wilson, 48-0. Coach Dave Holtsclaw's first year of varsity head coaching was a partial success, although the Leemen had trouble with depth on the squad. Standouts offensively were Alan Richardson, a third-team all-state selection at center, Ron Corbett, an all-district running back, guard John Hall and end George Goodloe, both of whom were also named to the All-District team. Defensively, All-District selections were Bruce Henry at linebacker and sophomore Doug Carter at defensive tackle. Dayton Hypes, Keith Spitzer, Stuart Coiner, and Jim Becks were other outstanding players.

Junior Varsity Compiles 17-1 Record
Led By Ware ■, Vaughn , Newlen, And Fultz
Ph illy Ware (14) drives for a layup against Albemarle. Ware was the leading jayvee scorer.
The Little Leemen turned in one of the most successful seasons and played some of the most exciting basketball in Lee jayvee history as they ran their way to a 17-1 record. They brought the jayvee mark for the last three seasons to 49-5. The team scored more than 100 points in three different games, and had four players averaging in double figures. Phil Ware, Howard Vaughn, Mark Newlen, and Benny Ergenbright averaged more than ten per game. Randy Gultz, the other starter was the leading play-maker. Coach Jim Digges, in his first year at Lee, came up with a big winner and groomed a number of boys for future varsity action.
John Morris (24) shoots a left-handed jump shot in the Waynesboro game.
Randy Fultz (20) fakes an Albemarle player before passing to Ph illy Ware (14) under the basket.
Leemen Race To Winning Season
Mike Sanger, Lee's top sprinter, crosses the finish line ahead of Lexington and Buena Vista in the 880 relay in the district meet. The relay team, made up of Sanger, Ron Corbett, Danny Carter, and Rodney Phillips went on to finish third in the state meet. They ran a 1:32.6 in the district meet for a school record.
Bob Depew shows his form in the discus. Depew finished first in both the district and state meets, and broke the school record previously held by his brother Cal many times during the year. Bob's finest throw of the year came in the state meet when he threw the discus 153' 11".
Jack Dozier clears the bar with his unorthodox backwards form, and led Lee High jumpers with a
style. He was always a center of attraction with his best jump of 58' 8" in his only year ot track.

Lee had one of its most successful seasons ever in 1968, as they came within four strokes of the district title and finished a strong seventh in the state. Tommy Wine led the team, and was ably backed up by Rusty Ashby, Woody Dixon, and Frank Thacker. Bob Wittenauer, Dennis Riddleburger, Roger Wimer, and Tommy Bell were the other lettermen for the Leemen in their finest season since Coach N. L. Deaver began coaching.
Roger Wimer exhibits very good form in hitting an iron shot to the 15th green. Wimer, a fine golfer, is expected to lead the team next year as a senior at Lee.

Lee Baseball Team Has Severe Setback
1968 was a year of bad breaks for the Leemen in baseball. With only one experienced pitcher available, the Leemen had some trouble, but still managed to win six games. Of their nine losses, seven were by one run.
Although they did not make the district playoffs, the Leemen showed that they were not pushovers many times. Led by the hitting of Dennis Bell, Tom Bosiack, Gary Hassett, and Ken McAllister and the pitching of Wayne Cox, the team performed well, although they did not live up to preseason expectations.
Wayne Cox, Lee's top pitcher, fires a hard one from the mound.

Senior Class Takes The Lead
A senior year is a year of holding onto and letting go
in the same instant. Effectiveness as a class is achieved . . .
Leadership is the key — and the Class of 1969 contained a wealth of leaders —
who
organized an elegant prom; produced an exceptional variety show
defeated a deflated puff team; sponsored a lucrative dance, and finally . . .
Graduation —
merging into an exciting world, conscious of youth.

Spirit Stick for Sophomores
Spirit!
That is the quality that earmarks the sophomore class —
more spirit than any other class at Lee.
"Spirit Stick" is theirs —
constitute a great part of the Pep Club. New formal initiation manifested itself as red dots on noses, class choruses in the cafeteria, beautiful "swine signs", all of which served to draw the class together. This class has withstood and will now
move!!
